BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Outside hitter Chelsea Wilhoite (Fr. / Jacksonville, Fla.) is the Gulf South Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week. Wilhoite set the tone defensively for the Argonauts, helping them to a 2-0 week and an East Division championship. In a 3-0 win at North Alabama, the freshman had an outstanding defensive performance. She contributed 18 digs on the night, and also collected two blocks. She averaged 4.4 digs per game on the week, and also provided some offensive punch with five kills and no errors.
Wilhoite is the seventh different Argonaut to win a Player of the Week award this season. West Florida has won eight awards over the last six weeks, and have landed nine of the twenty awards so far this season. Four times the Argos have had the offensive player of the week, and five times they have recorded the defensive player of the week.
Luciana Rapach has twice won the defensive player of the week, and Kimberly Clark has won both the offensive and defensive player of the week awards. Meanwhile, Danielle Spitzer (Offense), Isabela Gualberto (Offense), Madeline Gonzalez (Offense), and Jerica Carter (Defense) each won the award once. No school had ever previously had seven different players win the award.
The Argonauts are now 27-4 on the season, and play their final two home matches this weekend. West Alabama visits UWF on Friday at 7:00 pm for Senior Night, and Montevallo takes on the Argos on Saturday at 3:00 pm. West Florida has clinched the top seed in the East Division for the conference tournament beginning Nov. 9th.
