MONTEVALLO, Ala. - West Florida (18-13, 9-3) will represent the east division as the No. 2 seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament this Friday and Saturday (Nov. 3-4) in Florence, Ala. against the No. 3 seed Henderson State from the west division. In today's regular season finale, the Argonauts beat Montevallo (21-13, 4-8) for the second time this season, by a final score of 3-1 (30-24, 30-26, 23-30, 30-28).
"The conference championships serves as a second chance, especially for the upper-classmen," explained UWF Head Coach Melissa Wolter. I believe our seniors think that we have a lot of good volleyball left to play."
Neither team posted impressive attack percentages. The Argos had a .131 attack percentage, while the Falcons hit for a .126 mark. Montevallo was limited to .030 in game one and .025 in the second game.
Naiara Fernandes led the Argos with 22 kills and a .265 attack percentage. She also added 20 digs. Danielle Spitzer posted 14 kills with seven blocks. Carly Moyers notched 13 kills with six blocks. Marcela Cunha and Melina Pereira combined for 54 assists. Cunha had a match high 29 assists. Jerica Carter contributed with 17 digs, four aces and three assists. Montevallo was led by Lauren Tortorici's 16 kills, 14 digs and six blocks.
"Both teams struggled running an offense," said Wolter.
Montevallo finishes the season in fifth place in the GSC East and will not qualify for the conference tournament. West Florida is currently in eighth in the south region, with the top eight teams advancing to the NCAA II South Regional Championships on Nov. 9-11.
