CARROLLTON, Ga. - It looked as though West Georgia would hand West Florida their second conference loss of the season, as the Wolves won the first two games of the match. The Argonauts had other plans, and stormed back to win 3-2 (22-30, 23-30, 30-19, 30-24, 15-10).
"This is the first five game win of the season for us, and it was that much more significant because we were down two games," explained UWF Head Coach Melissa Wolter. "I believe this kind of win defines us as a team."
Naiara Fernandes had a match high 22 kills and a .280 attack percentage. Defensively she was a factor with 14 digs. Danielle Spitzer tallied 13 kills and an outstanding .522 attack percentage. Carly Moyers finished with 15 kills and a .286 attack percentage. She also added seven blocks. Marcela Cunha was an all-around solid contributor with her 44 assists, 13 digs, nine kills and three aces.
West Georgia was paced by Carolin Schoeneck's 20 kills and 12 digs. Juliana da Silva had 18 kills and 11 digs. Micque Parker set 70 assists with 13 digs.
After West Florida took a 10-9 lead in the first game, the Wolves went on a tear, outscoring the Argos 15-6 over the next 21 points and cruised to a 30-22 victory. West Georgia jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the early part of game two, yet again cruising to a victory, this time 30-23.
But in game three, Fernandes and the Argos began to make a comeback. With the Wolves leading at 6-4, Fernandes and West Florida jumped out, outscoring the Wolves 18-8 over the next 26 points to pull within one in the match at 2-1.
But the Wolves still had the lead, and took a quick 5-2 advantage in game four. But Jerica Carter's serve played tricks with West Georgia, as the Argos went on a 9-0 run on her serve. West Georgia pulled to within three at 24-21, but couldn't catch UWF, falling 30-23.
In game five, the battle went back and forth until the Argos took the lead for good at 5-5, never looking back in a 15-10 victory.
The match took a drastic momentum turn in games three through five. The Wolves had a .330 attack percentage in games one and two, while the Argos struggled at .107. West Florida flipped the switch in games three through five with an attack percentage of .344 to West Georgia's .210 mark.
West Florida improves to 12-8 overall and 6-1 in the GSC. West Georgia moves to 10-12 overall and 2-5 in the conference. The Argonauts are 2-0 versus the Wolves this season. West Florida hosts Bentley on Friday at 7:30 pm. Follow the action live with Statcrew live stats on goargos.com.
