PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Argos were tested tonight against one of the nation's elite teams in Central Missouri State. Their solid effort in games two and three were not enough as the Jennies performed near flawlessly en route to a 3-0 win. West Florida plays two more matches tomorrow at 11:15 am and 7 pm against Southwest Baptist and Missouri Western respectively, as part of the Argonaut Regional Crossover.
West Florida dropped games by final scores of 30-17, 30-26, and 30-26. The Jennies committed only 12 attack errors in the match to UWF's 24. Naiara Fernandes (Sr. / Belo Horizonte, Brazil) paced West Florida with 20 kills, 16 digs and a .357 attack percentage. Danielle Spitzer (Jr. / Birmingham, Ala.) scored the next highest kill total with seven. Jerica Carter (So. / Gainesville, Fla.) tallied 13 digs and Melina Pereira (Sr. / Sao Paulo, Brazil) collected 35 assists. Brooke Butler led CMSU with 17 kills and Jillian Ohrman added 14. As a team, the Jennies set 49 assists with eight service aces.
In the decisive game three, UWF trailed for most of the way. A kill by Ohrman, an ace by Katie Tarka and a UWF attack error put CMSU ahead 16-10. The Argos answered with three straight point on two CMSU errors and a kill by Louann Rusch (Fr. / Homestead, Fla.). The Jennies lead remained above three points until, UWF made one final push and cut the lead to two at 28-26. The Argos trailed by six and scored four straight points on kills by Rusch and Fernandes, along with two CMSU errors. Andrea Robertson scored back-to-back kills to seal the victory for CMSU.
Game two was equally as close. West Florida trailed throughout, including a 27-21 deficit. Two quick points on rare CMSU miscues cut the lead to four. The Jennies scored twice on a UWF error and a kill by Ohrman, but UWF countered with three points on a kill by Kovel and two CMSU errors. The Jennies had game point at 29-26, and a UWF ball handling error put CMSU ahead two games to none.
A .000 attack percentage plagued UWF in game one. The Argos fell behind big early on, behind an impressive .359 CMSU attack percentage. West Florida slips to 3-7, while CMSU improves to 10-2.
