ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - After losing their regular season finale on Apr. 6, fourth-ranked West Florida has yet to taste defeat in post-season competition. On Wednesday, West Florida will look to extend their winning streak with a match in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships at Sanlando Park.
West Florida (20-6) will draw 12th ranked Abilene Christian (24-5) in Wednesday's Round of 16 match at 4 p.m. EST. The Argonauts are on a current five-match winning streak and have shutout their last two opponents. In last week's NCAA Division II South Region Tournament, West Florida breezed past Tuskegee and Harding by 5-0 scores. The Argonauts have posted seven shutouts and have only lost three games in their last eight wins. Last season West Florida won two matches at the national tournament before dropping a 5-1 decision to eventual national champion BYU-Hawaii.
Abilene Christian also shutout their two opponents at last week's NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament. The Wildcats posted 5-0 wins over Cameron and Midwestern State. Abilene State, who earned a trip to the Round of 16 last season, has won nine of their last 11 matches.
West Florida has won the previous three matches against Abilene Christian. Last season the Argonauts earned an 8-1 win over the Wildcats in Austin, Texas. The winner of Wednesday's match will move on to the quarterfinals on Thursday to face the winner of the California University of Pennsylvania/South Carolina-Upstate match.
