PENSACOLA, Fla. - The 15th ranked West Florida women's tennis team powered their way to the NCAA Championships, by defeating 19th ranked Delta State, by a 5-0 score, in the South Regional. The Argos had defeated the Lady Statesmen twice already this year. During the regular season, UWF topped Delta State by a 7-2 score, and then won again in the conference tournament by a 5-3 score. The Argos raced out to a 3-0 lead with three convincing doubles wins, and capped off the Regional victory by winning the first two singles matches to finish.
In doubles, the Argos avenged some earlier losses. The Argos number one doubles team, ranked 5th nationally, of Suzana Cavalcante and Paola Arevalo, avenged their only loss to a division one opponent this year, by winning convincingly at 8-2. Cavalcante and Arevalo had dropped their doubles match to Katharina Nett and Krystle Ozols, the last time the teams played, which was the only loss in the last 22 doubles matches for Cavalcante and Arevalo.
At the number two doubles position, Taylor Brewster and Lorena Rebolledo, played Bouchard and Benzaki for the third time this season. The teams split their first two matches, with both decided in a tie-breaker. However, this time, the Argos were on top of their games, and won 8-3. Then, in the third doubles position, Renata Mattos and Tatiana Rodrigues, defeated Delta State for the third straight time, with a score of 8-5 this time.
In singles, Suzana Cavalcante, the third ranked singles player in division II, put away her opponent by a 6-3, 6-1 score to wrap up the match with a 5-0 win for UWF. Meanwhile, at the number four singles, Taylor Brewster was the first to score a point from singles, and her 6-2, 6-4 win over Krystle Ozols, put UWF up by a 4-0 score. At that point, all other singles matches were halted, since the Argos clinched the win.
The Argos win sends them to the National Championships for the 12th consecutive year. The team was the national runner's up last year, falling to top ranked BYU-Hawaii in the national finals. West Florida is looking for a shot at BYU-Hawaii again this season, and would face the top ranked school on May 15th in the NCAA quarterfinals, if they can win their round of 16 match on May 14th. The NCAA championships will be played at Memorial Park and Homer Ford Park in Houston, Texas.
