Huntsville, Ala. After blanking three Gulf South Conference opponents, the West Florida Women's Tennis (5-6, 4-0 GSC) defeated one more GSC rival. Despite the tiredness from three matches on the day before, the now ranked 18th in the nation, Argonauts, managed to beat unranked, North Alabama (2-4, 2-1 GSC) at the UAH campus in Huntsville, Ala.. With the win on the last match of the "conference weekend", the Argos earned its fifth victory of the season, the fourth one over a GSC opponent.
The match started off with the Argonauts earning the lead after the doubles action, by winning two out of three doubles matches. In the first doubles spot, the fifth ranked doubles team formed by Argonauts Suzana Cavalcante (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paola Arevalo (senior/Cali, Colombia) defeated the team formed by Lady Lions Jessica Strucher and Pippa Reakes, 8-5. The Lady Lions earned one point in double in the second position when, Argonauts Taylor Brewster (freshman/Ontaro, Canada) and Lorena Rebolledo (freshman/Puebla,Mexico) fell short, 8-6. In the third doubles spot, Renata Mattos (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Tatiana Rodrigues (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Arrie Moore and Mallory Waites by not dropping a single game, 8-0, giving the 2-1 lead to the Argonauts.
In singles action, the Argos earned its other three points, and dropped one. Playing in the first singles position, Cavalcante did not manage the lead she had against Lady Lions #1 player, and fell 1-6, 7-5, 6-1. In the #2 singles spot, Arevalo defeated Yuliya Zelenskaya in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. In the third singles position, Mattos defeated Alviz with a 6-1, 6-0 score. Playing in the sixth spot, Rodrigues cruised over Arrie Moore with a 6-1, 6-2 score, to give the Argonauts a final score of 5-2.
The Argonauts improved to a 5-6 overall record, while the Lady Lions dropped to 2-4. After the long trip in which the Argonauts faced four GSC opponents in a couple of days, the Argos will return to action tomorrow, Sunday 9th, at 1:00p.m. CT. The Argonauts will play its first home match of this season at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carlson Complex located at the UWF main campus. The Argos will face Division I University of Memphis (4-5). At 11:00a.m. CT, a free tennis clinic and a free cookout will be offered from the Argonauts to those who show up to the event.
