Huntsville, Ala. After blanking West Alabama and Montevallo, the West Florida Women's Tennis (4-6, 3-0 GSC) returned to action three hours later to defeat one more GSC rival. The fifth ranked, Argonauts, blanked 9-0 the "conference weekend" holsters, Alabama-Huntsville (3-5, 1-3 GSC), 9-0. With the result, the Argos earned its fourth victory of the season, the third one over a GSC opponent.
The Argonauts started off the match dominating the Lady Chargers. In the doubles action, the Argonauts won all three matches. In the first doubles spot, the fifth ranked doubles team formed by Argonauts Suzana Cavalcante (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paola Arevalo (senior/Cali, Colombia) defeated the team formed by Lady Chargers Mireia Fernandez and Mar Piernavieja, 8-1. In the second position, Argonauts Taylor Brewster (freshman/Ontaro, Canada) and Leslie Brown (freshman/Shalimar, Fla.) defeated Yngrid Alviz and Emily Taylor 8-2. Since the Lady chargers had its sixth player injured, the third doubles point was earned when Renata Mattos (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Tatiana Rodrigues (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated the Lady Chargers by default, giving the 3-0 lead to the Argonauts.
The Argos also took over the singles action by dropping only seven games in all five matches combined. Playing in the first singles position, Cavalcante rolled over the Lady Chargers #1 player Mireia Fernandez, 6-0, 6-0. In the #2 singles spot, Arevalo also did not drop a game against Piernavieja, 6-0, 6-0. In the third singles position, Mattos defeated Alviz with a 6-2, 6-0 score. Playing in the fourth singles spot, Argonaut Brewster beat Taylor, 6-3, 6-2. In the fifth spot, Rodrigues did not drop a game to beat Heather Gargis in her 6-0, 6-0 win. The last point for the Argonauts was earned when Leslie Brown did not need to enter the court to beat Stacy Wetmore by a default, to give the Argonauts a final score of 9-0.
"Our girls had a big day today, winning three conference matches, which hopefully will get them started for another successful season", said assistant coach Pilar Cortes. "These wins should help the girls getting more confidence, and the hard work will start paying off in the rest of the season".
The Argonauts improved to a 4-6 overall record, while the Lady Chargers dropped to 3-5. The Argonauts have a tough schedule, in which three matches were played this Friday, March 7th. The Argonauts return to action tomorrow, Saturday 8th, at 1:00p.m. CT in Huntsville, Ala., when it will face unranked GSC rival North Alabama (2-3, 1-0 GSC). This will be the fourth GSC opponent that the Argos will face this weekend.
