COLUMBUS, Ga. - The West Florida Women's tennis team (0-3) is facing a tough start this season. The Argonauts played Columbus State University (4-1) at Columbus, Ga., during the third day of the three-day road trip. The 13th ranked Cougars defeated the fifth ranked Argos 6-3. It marked the third consecutive loss against two top ranked Division II schools, and one of the top teams in the NAIA.
In the doubles action, the Argonauts finished up at a 2-1 disadvantage. In the first doubles spot, the Argonauts fifth ranked doubles team of Suzana Cavalcante (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paola Arevalo (senior/Cali, Colombia), defeated the 19th ranked team formed by the Cougars Agata Polcyn and Lindsey Groenewald in an exciting match that ended in the tiebreak. The Argonauts dropped the other two doubles matches. In the second spot Argonauts Taylor Brewster (freshman/Ontaro, Canada) and Tatiana Rodrigues (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) fell 8-4 to the Cougars. The Argonauts dropped the third doubles point when Renata Mattos (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Lorena Rebolledo (freshman/Puebla, Mexico) were defeated 8-2, giving the 2-1 lead to the Cougars.
In singles action the Cougars won four out of six possible matches. The Argonauts picked a pair of victories in the first and third position. In the first spot, the nationally ranked third best player in division II, Suzana Cavalcante rolled over 50th ranked Roxana Dondera with a 7-5, 6-0 win. In the third spot, the 43rd ranked Mattos, defeated Gabriela Valisescu 7-5, 6-2. However, in the second singles spot, 45th ranked Arevalo fell to 30th ranked Agata Polcyn 6-0, 6-1. In the fourth spot Brewster had a tough match dropping her match to her opponent at 6-3, 7-6. Playing in the fifth position, Rodrigues dropped to the Cougars 6-4, 6-1. Rebolledo also dropped her match in straight sets by a 6-1, 6-1, giving the final point to the Cougars to finish the match at 6-3.
The Cougars improved to a 4-1 record, while the Argonauts dropped to 0-3. The Argonauts will return to action next week to try to get their first win of the season. The Argos will remain on the road for action, and do not open at home until March 13th.
