West Florida Earns 7th Inning Win Over GSC Opponent North Alabama, 2-1

April 5, 2008

FLORENCE, Ala. - Giving up only four hits on the day, pitcher Jillian LaFrance improved her record to 12-6 on the year with the win over UNA. West Florida provided 8 hits in the win with Kristee Wheeler leading at the plate going 2-for-3. Wheeler posted her third homerun of the season in the second inning, a solo shot over the left center field fence. Melissa Chastang was also 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles on the day which allowed her to score the winning run. Both teams were scoreless in the first inning, but Kristee Wheeler took matters into her own hands when she hit a solo homerun in the top of the 2nd to give UWF the lead, 1-0. UNA threatened in the bottom of the 2nd when they loaded the bases off two hits and a UWF error. With one out and the bases loaded, shortstop Caurie Miller provided solid defense and put out the next two batter to get out of the inning. The 3rd inning brought back to back doubles for UNA that tied the score 1-1. The next three innings were quiet for both teams until the top of the seventh. Melissa Chastang singled to put the winning run on base and advanced to third on a sacrifice from Heather Bell. Whitney Gay answered Coach Tami Cyr's call and laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Chastang to give West Florida the lead. Again, North Alabama threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, but LaFrance and the Argos held on to pick up the conference win. The Argos' games were supposed to be broadcast live from Florence, Alabama but technical difficulties led to the cancellation of the broadcasts. However, tomorrow's games against top ranked Alabama-Huntsville are still scheduled to be broadcast live from Huntsville beginning at 1pm CST. The second game of the doubleheader against UNA was set to begin shortly after the end of the first.
