BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The West Florida Softball team earned their sixth individual award on the season, as slugging third baseman Nicky VanCamp was named the GSC East Division Player of the Week for the second time this season. VanCamp becomes the first repeat winner of the Player of Week, while teammate Jillian LaFrance has already won the Pitcher of the Week Award twice this season.
Nicky earned the Award this week, as she hit .521, going 12 for 23 at the plate, with two doubles and a home run. She added six RBI's during the four conference road games over the weekend. The Senior from Davenport, Iowa led the Argos to a 3-1 conference record for the week, including blasting her team leading seventh home run in the 8-6 win over West Alabama. For the week, she produced a slugging percentage of .739, while recording an on-base percentage of .560, and has helped the Argos to a 25-14 start to the season.
The Nicky VanCamp name is all over the Gulf South Conference Statistics pages, as she is among the top ten in the conference in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, home runs, total bases, walks, and runs batted in. She is second in the conference in walks with 26 so far this year, and trails only teammate Caurie Miller, who leads the conference with 28. The high number of walks is a tribute to the hitting threat, which leads to pitchers pitching around the slugger.
The Argos have earned six of the 14 awards this season, with two of the seven player of the week award (VanCamp), and four of the seven pitcher of the week awards, as LaFrance has earned the award twice, while Taren Walton and Emily Burge have each been honored once. Alabama Huntsville is second in the East Division with four weekly awards. UAH is the top ranked team in the country, and the Argos and Nicky VanCamp will travel to Huntsville, next weekend for a doubleheader. The Argos are currently 6-4 in conference play, while UAH is 3-3. Both teams are trailing the 11th ranked Valdosta State Lady Blazers, who are 8-2. The upcoming conference games for West Florida will be broadcast on Stretch Internet.
