DECATUR, Ala. - The Argonauts closed the GSC Crossover tournament in Decatur, Alabama on Sunday morning with their fifth win of the weekend over Henderson State University, 6-1. Pitcher Jillian LaFrance got the win to improve to 14-7 on the season, giving up just four hits and striking out six. LaFrance walked just one batter and gave up one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, just shy of a shutout. Both LaFrance and Taren Walton had homeruns, while Melissa Chastang led the team going 3-for-4 at the plate. West Florida finished the weekend 5-1, improving on the season 33-18 and 13-7 in GSC play.
West Florida's first two runs came in the second inning off of a double from Chastang, scoring Caurie Miller and Kristee Wheeler who were on with walks. The Argos added a third run in the fourth inning when Chastang reached base on a single and scored on an RBI single up the middle from Whitney Gay. LaFrance helped herself in the top of the fifth inning with a homerun over the right field fence that scored Nicky VanCamp, on with a walk.
UWF added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning with a leadoff homerun from rightfielder Taren Walton. On top of Melissa Chastang's successful day at the plate, Caurie Miller helped lead the Argonauts, going 2-for-2 with two singles and two walks. Julie Carroll also had a single to pick up West Florida's 10th hit of the game.
Henderson State's only run came in the bottom of the seventh inning to break up a LaFrance shutout. West Florida will continue GSC play Monday afternoon, facing 20th ranked Valdosta State University at 1PM and 3PM. UWF's last home games will be played Saturday and Sunday to finish off regular season play against West Alabama and West Georgia.
