HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - In the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, the West Florida softball team fell 6-2 to the top ranked Chargers of Alabama Huntsville. Jillian LaFrance and Emily Burge pitched for UWF, but couldn't hold down the Chargers. The two teams each have eight wins in the conference so far, and only Valdosta State is ahead of the two teams in the standings, with nine wins.
The Argos scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, on a two run home run by Nicky VanCamp. VanCamp's blast was her 8th home run of the season, and it followed a walk to Taren Walton. However, UAH would score a run in the bottom of the first, and two in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead, and went on to a 6-2 win.
Heather Bell, Whitney Gay, Caurie Miller, Kristee Wheeler, and Melissa Chastang all had hits for UWF, but would all be stranded on base. Meanwhile, Alabama Huntsville pounded out 11 hits en route to the victory. The Chargers hits included four doubles, a triple, and a home run, while only VanCamp's home run was an extra base hit for UWF.
West Florida is now 28-17 overall, and 8-6 in conference play after the split with Alabama Huntsville. The Chargers are 37-6, and 8-4 in the conference with two of those loses coming to UWF this season, as the teams split doubleheaders home and away. Jillian LaFrance dropped to 12-7 on the year, with the pitching loss for UWF.
