FLORENCE, Ala. - The West Florida softball team dropped the second game of a doubleheader at North Alabama, by a 4-1 score, after winning game one by a 2-1 score. The split left both teams at 7-5 in conference play. Emily Burge pitched a complete game, but did not get enough run support to win.
North Alabama, 19-14 on the season overall, scored a run in the first inning, and then added a two run homer in the second inning. The Lions would tack on a fifth inning run, and the Argos would score a run late to avoid the shutout. Argos starting pitcher Emily Burge took the loss for UWF, and dropped her record to 7-5 on the season, despite hurling a complete game with seven strikeouts. Burge gave up only six hits and three earned runs.
The Argos mounted a small rally in the seventh inning, when Caurie Miller led off with a double. Franny Bell pinch ran for Miller, and scored when Emily Burge delivered an RBI single. West Florida managed just three other hits, with Heather Bell collecting two, while Jillian LaFrance had the other hit.
West Florida is now 27-16 after the split with North Alabama. The Argos travel to Alabama Huntsville for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader with the number one ranked Chargers, who are 37-5 on the season. The two teams met earlier in Pensacola, with each team getting a win in the doubleheader.
