UWF Wins with a Walk Off Double in the Bottom of the Seventh Inning

March 11, 2008

Box Score

PENSACOLA, Fla. - With the score tied 6-6 in the seventh inning, pinch hitter Stephany Aguiliar stepped up to the plate, and sent everyone home when she blasted a stand up double to score pinch runner Dawnyele Stapleton with the winning run. The 7-6 dramatic win improved the Argos to 17-6 on the season, and completed a sweep of the Eagles from Central Methodist. Pitcher Jillian LaFrance finished the game in relief of Emily Burge, and picked up the win, after pitching a complete game victory in game one of the doubleheader.

West Florida started the second game a little quieter than the first, but they were still the first to score in the bottom of the second. Taren Walton ripped a hard double down the right line, and advanced to third on an illegal pitch. After Kat Pursell drew a walk, Julie Carroll came up and sliced a single up the middle to score Walton.

Scoring continued in the bottom of the third inning for UWF when Kristee Wheeler smashed a single over top the shortstop, and Nicky VanCamp drew a walk. Melissa Chastang came in to pinch run for Wheeler, and Emily Burge hit a double to the left field fence to score two runs.

The Eagles scored in the fourth after a walk, an Argo error, and a single to make the score 3-2. They threatened again in the fifth moving the go ahead runners to second and third, but Argo defense tightened and held on unharmed. The damage was done in the top of the sixth inning when three Argonaut errors and two Eagle hits allowed four runs to score.

Julie Carroll answered in the bottom of the sixth with a long homerun, her first of the season. Whitney Gay came in as a pinch hitter for Franny Bell, and hit a solid single through the left side to put a runner on base. Bell came back in to run and advanced twice on illegal pitches from CMU's McCall Kenney. Walks drawn by Heather Bell and VanCamp loaded the bases for relief pitcher Jillian LaFrance. LaFrance stepped up to answer the call with a two run single to tie the game.

The bottom of the seventh inning was cruicial for West Florida, when Carroll was hit by a pitch to put a runner on base. Pinch hitter Stephany Aguiliar stepped up for the Argos and blasted a stand up double to score pinch runner Dawnyele Stapleton to win the game.

The Argos take the field again on Wednesday vs. Shorter, with games at 1:00 and 3:00, as Spring Fling continues at the UWF Softball Complex.
