March 8, 2008

Box Score

Atlanta, Ga. - The Argonauts softball team fought cold weather conditions in north Georgia, to shut out Paine College 18-0 Friday afternoon, in the first game of the Clarke-Atlanta tournament. Pitcher Taren Walton hurled a one-hitter and had ten strikeouts in seven innings. Meanwhile, the Argos offense pounded out 14 hits on the way to scoring 18 runs.

West Florida put on an offensive display at the plate, and was led by Dawnyele Stapleton who went three-for-three with three singles, two of which were bunt singles. Meanwhile, Jillian LaFrance was three-for-five on the day with a two doubles and single. Walton helped herself at the plate, going two-for-three with a double and a single. The Argos were solid on defense, with no errors, to help Walton hold Paine to just one hit in the contest.

The win improved UWF to 15-6 on the season, while the remainder of the Clark Atlanta Tournament was snowed out. The Argos were scheduled to play Fort Valley State and Stillman following the win over Paine; however, nasty weather halted play after the first round of games on Friday morning. All Saturday action was also cancelled due to snow.
