PENSACOLA, Fla. - Senior captain Lindsey Nemanich has not missed a step in the 2006 season, picking up were she left off last year, as a corner stone to one of the best defenses in the Gulf South Conference.
Her on-field importance and domination was clearly evident in Sunday's match against South Region rival Barry, in which Nemanich was part of an Argonaut defense that allowed only eight shots on goal.
"I think every one is beginning to realize who we have to play to win this year," Nemanich said. "We can't slack off it's not going to be an easy year. I think everyone though we wee going to walk onto the field an do what we did last year no problem."
To go along with her stellar defensive play Nemanich tallied the first two assists of the game in West Florida's 7-0 shut out victory over the Buccaneers.
"It is awesome because I don't get much glory and players usually don't get recognized for playing strong defense," Nemanich said. "But you do get recognized when people see goal and assists out of you."
Nemanich has lived up to the responsibilities of being Argonaut captain by leading by example when she is on the field and letting her skill be a bench mark to the younger player to look up to.
"I don't feel a lot of pressure but I do feel it up to me to control the defense like I did in the past," Nemanich said. "It doesn't matter if I am captain or not, the pressure is no more than usual."
Looking forward Nemanich and the Argonauts begin their Gulf South Conference schedule this weekend when they travel to Arkansas, to face Harding n Friday followed by Ouachita Baptist on Sunday.
"We just need to keep creative and keep the teams guessing what we are doing," Nemanich said.
No. 17 West Florida was the GSC regular season champions in 2005 and going into conference play the Argonauts have a bull's eye on their back, but Nemanich prefer to have it that way.
"I like being the team to beat," said Nemanich. "It's fun."
