PENSACOLA, Fla. - Led by Dernelle Mascall with three goals and Brandi Adams with three assists, No. 13 West Florida (13-2-0, 8-0-0 GSC) finished their 2007 Gulf South Conference schedule with an unblemished record as they took out their final conference opponent of the season Montevallo (11-7-0, 6-2-0 GSC) 3-0 Friday night at the UWF Sports Complex. It was Mascall's third hat trick and 11th goal in the Argonauts last four matches, as she became West Florida's single season record holder for goals with 21.
Mascall struck first 11 minutes into the match when she headed the ball past the Falcons goal keeper coming off a corner kick taken by Brandi Adams. The goal tied Mascall with Brianna Oeser for West Florida's single season record in goals at 19.
Mascall's record breaking goal came nine minutes later when Adams received a throw in and flicked the ball to the sophomore striker. Mascall broke past the Falcons defense and beat the keeper, giving West Florida a 2-0 lead going into the break.
The Lady Falcons would hang tough during the second half and holding the Argonauts five shot in the half. However, Mascall would make the most of her opportunities as she completed the hat trick in the 88th minute, when Adams sent in a cross for the Trinidad native to finish.
Once again the Argonauts defense stood strong as they kept Montevallo to four shots in each half and only two of those were on goal. West Florida held their GSC foes to only one goal this season.
Courtney Jones collected two saves en route to her 12th shutout of the season and 23 of her career. Jones has not been scored on in 699 minutes and currently has a 0.40 goals-against-average, which if kept up will become a school record.
It is the 12th straight victory for West Florida as they clinched the top seed for next week's GSC tournament held at Brosnaham Park. West Florida will face Harding University in the first round of the conference championships. In their other match up this season the Argonauts edged the Bisons 1-0.
The Argonauts will play one more home match Sunday afternoon at the UWF Sports complex against Thomas University. During halftime of each match West Florida athletic will honor the two seniors Adams and Marie Hastings. "Live Stats" will be available during the match.
