West Florida Wins 10th Straight Match

Oct. 20, 2007

Box Score

PENSACOLA, Fla. - In soggy conditions, West Florida (11-2-0, 6-0-0 GSC) poured on the goals en route to a 6-0 triumph over conference foe North Alabama (7-9-1, 1-3-1 GSC) Friday night at the UWF Sports Complex during the 2007 homecoming festivities. For the second straight match, Dernelle Mascall picked up a hat trick in the fixture as the Argonauts rolled to their 10th straight victory.

Mascall collected all of her goals inside the first 30 minutes of the match giving West Florida a 3-0 lead. The sophomore's first goal came in the 24 minute when she received a pass from Naila Owens and dribbled to the top of the box before rifling a shot past the keeper. Two minutes later Sheka Codenr hit a thru pass that left Mascall on a breakaway for the goal. The Trinidad native scored her 16th goal of the season at the 29:46 mark of the match, following a pair of good passes that found her in the box. Lura Carter sent the ball down into the corner of the field for Alison Riley, who placed the cross to Mascall for the goal. Mascall is now third in school history for single season goals three shy of the record.

In the 36th minute, Riley notched her second goal of the season on a blast from outside the 18-yard box. The play was set up by Kristin Rhodes who flicked the ball to Riley, giving West Florida a 4-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Argonauts continued to control the pace of the game and once again the defense stood strong as they out shot the Lions 16-1 in the half, 26-1 in the match.

In the 68th minute, Jodi Galucci took a pass from Jordan McKenzie and out ran the defense for her 10th goal of the season.

With less than two minutes left to go in the half Ursula Yeager dribble the ball deep into the Lions area before nailing a cross to Alex Avram who quickly tucked away the shot for her second goal of the season. It was Yeager's first point of the year.

It is Courtney Jones' fifth straight clean sheet and eighth of the season. The sophomore keeper has allowed only one goal during conference play and her goals-against-average is 0.46 for the season. She is two shutouts shy of the West Florida season record of 13 set by Mandy Harland in 1998.

The Argonauts will continue with Gulf South Conference play when they travel to West Georgia's campus to take on the Wolves. Kick off is set for 12 p.m. CT and "Live Stats" will be available on the Women's Soccer page at goargos.com.
