HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - West Florida (9-2-0, 4-0-0 GSC) remained undefeated in the Gulf South Conference as they improved their shut out streak to three straight games, the Argonauts second longest of the season, following the 4-0 victory over Alabama-Huntsville Friday afternoon at Chargers Field.
The Argonauts started the scoring early in the match with their first goal in the third minute of action. Kaley Morris knocked in a corner kick taken by Brandi Adams, which was flicked on by Anastasia Prescott. It was Morris first goal of the season.
In the 31st minute of the match, West Florida struck again. Dernelle Mascall used her head to flick the ball to Jodi Galucci inside the box, for her seventh goal of the season.
Just before the half Kristin Rhodes added her second goal of the season when she hooked in a corner kick that beat the keeper far post, giving West Florida a 3-0 lead at the break.
The Argonauts dominated the first half action out shooting the Charges 7-3, but in the second half the game even out as both team were able to fire five shot a piece. However, it was West Florida that found the back of the net at 60:40 mark of the match, when Alison Riley tucked away West Florida's third goal on a corner kick. Riley was the 14th different Argonauts to score a goal this season.
It was the sixth straight match that West Florida held the opposing team to under ten shots. For the season the Argonauts have out shot their opponents 169-77, and out scored their opponents 34-6. If West Florida can hold their final five opponents to three goals or less they will set school record for fewest goals allowed in the season, 9, set in 2006.
Courtney Jones picked up her ninth shutout of the season and 20th of her career in the West Florida triumph. She had
West Florida next fixture is against Delta State on Sunday with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The Argonauts have never lost to the Lady Statesmen and "Live Stats" will be available for the match.
