THOMASVILLE, Ga. - Senior Mauricia Nicholson, (Mount Pleasant, Tobago/Bishop's HS) who entered Tuesday's match with 99 career points, netted two goals in ninth-ranked West Florida's 5-0 win over non-conference foe Thomas. With 103 career points, Nicholson is just the third Argonaut (Brianna Oeser, Brook Pace) in history to compile at least 100 points. West Florida (8-2-2) won their fourth straight match, which have all been shutouts. Thomas (4-8-1) fell to 0-6 all-time against West Florida.
Nicholson recorded her 101st point in the 10th minute on an assist from Audia Sullivan (Kingston Jamaica/William Carey). In the 49th minute, senior Patricia Toledo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Cloud County CC) dribbled the ball into the Thomas zone and found a wide open Sullivan, who netted her fifth goal of the season for a 2-0 lead.
After Brandi Adams (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze HS) converted a penalty kick in the 64th minute, a pair of freshman set up the Argonauts fourth goal. Kaley Morris (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze HS) dribbled down the sideline before sending a cross to Naila Owens (Jacksonville, Fla./Paxson School for Advanced Studies) for her first career goal in the 72nd minute. Nicholson's added her sixth goal of the season in the 87th minute on Sullivan's second assist of the game.
Freshman Courtney Jones (Panama City, Fla./Bay HS) only needed to make one save in earning her sixth shutout of the season. Thomas's Brittany Wilkinson collected 12 saves in a losing effort. West Florida held a 31-4 advantage in shots, including a 17-1 edge in shots on goal.
"We pretty much controlled the game throughout the first half, and I was pleased with the scoring opportunities," said head coach Joe Bartlinski. "I was also pleased that our defense did not give up Thomas's first shot on goal until the final 10 minutes of the match. It is good to have these matches so that we can work on some of the things we worked on in practice."
West Florida returns to Gulf South Conference action this Sunday against West Georgia. The match will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the UWF Soccer Complex.
