PENSACOLA, Fla. - Patricia Toledo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Cloud County CC) scored two goals and Mauricia Nicholson (Mount Pleasant, Tobago/Bishop's HS) added a goal and an assist as West Florida blanked Christian Brothers, 4-0, Sunday at the UWF Soccer Complex. West Florida (6-2-2, 3-0 GSC) won for the sixth time in the last seven matches. Christian Brothers (6-4-0, 1-2 GSC) was shutout for the second consecutive conference match.
"Our offense and defense played well during the entire match," said head coach Joe Bartlinski. "Friday's loss (to Tampa) was tough for us mentally, but we handled the rebound really well today."
Toledo doubled her season goal total in the first half. Just 5:19 into the match, Toledo's shot from the top of the box off a pass from Nicholson snuck past Christian Brothers goalkeeper Christina Barone for the 1-0 lead. In the 30th minute, Toledo was on the receiving end of a give-and-go from teammate Kelly Anne St. Clair (Casteries, St. Lucia/Lassen College) for her second goal. It was Toledo's sixth career multiple-goal match.
While West Florida's defense held Christian Brothers to only two shots in both halves, the Argonauts added some insurance goals in the second half. In the 57th minute, Marcela Franco (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Visconde de Porto Seguro) took a pass from Jodi Galucci (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) in the box and scored her team-high fifth goal of the season. Nicholson completed the scoring in the 68th minute with her third goal of the season. St. Clair and Naila Owens (Jacksonville, Fla./Paxson School for Advanced Studies) recorded the assists.
Freshman Courtney Jones (Panama City, Fla./Bay HS) collected two saves in earning her fifth shutout of the season. Jones joined former Argonaut goalkeepers Mandy Harland (1997) and Sharon Kerby (2001) with five shutouts in a season. Barone recorded six saves for Christian Brothers. West Florida finished with a 24-4 advantage in shots, and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
West Florida will host Gulf South Conference opponent Alabama-Huntsville this Friday at the UWF Soccer Complex. The match will begin at 5:00 p.m.
