PENSACOLA, Fla. - The defending national champions Metro State were too much for West Florida to handle during their season opener, as the Roadrunners defteated the Argonauts 3-0, Friday night at the UWF Soccer Complex.
The first half was a defensive struggle with both teams combining for only nine shots, six for the Roadrunners and three for the Argonauts. On the final shot of the half, Metro State finally capitalized with the first goal of the game in the 40th minute. Argos goal keeper Courtney Jones collected five saves in the first 45 minutes, but that was not enough as West Florida went into the break down by the one goal.
In the second half the Roadrunners continued to take aim at the goal, firing seven shots on target, which was the same amount of shot the Argonauts, took all game. Metro State capitalized on the numerous shots burying two second half goals.
The Roadrunner extended their lead eight minutes into the second half. Katie Kibley got advantage of the ball inside the box and crossed it to her teammate Madison McQuilliams who directed the ball into the back of the net.
Metro State concluded the scoring with a goal in the 72nd minute of the game, when a McQuilliam`s blocked shot ended up at the feet of Ashley Muchiando how punched in the Roadrunners final goal of the match.
Wet Florida tallied seven shots in the game three of which were on goal. Metro State took 13 shots in the game nine of which were shots on goal. Senior Brandi Adams led the Argonaut attack firing three shot, two of them on goal.
Metro State goalkeeper Rachel Zollner picked up the clean cheet collect three aves in the process. Even with the lead, the Roadrunner remained relentless on the field collecting six second half fouls, the same amount West Florida had the entire game.
Up next for West Florida is Georgia Southwestern on Sunday, with game time scheduled for 2 p.m. It is the first meeting between the two teams.
