Eighth Ranked West Florida Crowned Flagler Fall Slam Champs

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - West Florida won their first tournament of the 2006-07 season today by topping the 16-team field at the Flagler College Fall Slam Invitational. Three of UWF's five golfers finished in the top ten out of 85 competitors. Vicky Jackson (Forth Walton Beach, Fla. / Fort Walton Beach HS) edged teammate Sarah Nicholson (Cedar Falls, Iowa / Cedar Falls HS) by one stroke to win the individual title. Eighth ranked UWF defeated third ranked Nova Southeastern by one stroke.

West Florida posted a 613 through 36 holes at The King & The Bear Course at the World Golf Village (par-72, 5,987 yards). Nova Southeastern was one shot behind at 614. The Argos also defeated fourth ranked Barry University who finished in fourth with a 637, behind Embry-Riddle.

Jackson shot a 148 (+4) for the tournament. She shot a 71 on Monday and a 77 today. Nicholson finished second with a 149 (+5). She shot a 72 on Monday and a 77 today. Lorena Fortlage (Ascucion, Paraguay) had a solid outing with a 155 (+11), including a team high 76 today. She finished in a tie for eighth. Natalia Espinosa (Bogota, Colombia) landed in 25th place with a 162 (+18). Rachel Christ (Charlotte, N.C.) followed with a 163 (+19), and finished in a tie for 26th.

The Argos are now 8-3 against top 25 teams this year. Jackson's tied the second best 36 round score in school history with her 148. West Florida is off until Feb. 27-28 in the Sixth Annual Lady Moc Invitational in Lakeland, Fla.
