FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The University of West Florida Women's Golf team finished the first round of the NSU Spring Classic in seventh place, with a score of 323. The second round was scheduled for later today, with the final round to be played tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Cypress Golf course in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The first round was delayed by rain, but finally completed with Florida Southern just ahead of the host school, Nova Southeastern, for the team lead. Meanwhile, Argos Freshman Bhavna Shetty (Mysore, India) is currently tied for third, with a first round score of 75, just one shot off the lead.
The Argos team score of 323 was just one stroke behind 6th place Pfeiffer University, and 19 strokes back of top ranked Florida Southern. The Mocs of FSC scored a 304 to lead the way, with Nova Southeastern (307), Lynn (309), and Barry (310) right behind. The individual leaders include Daniela Iacobelli of Florida Tech, and Katy McNicoll of Lynn University. Both players were two over par on the challenging 6,090 yard par 72 course. Six players, including Shetty were tied with a 75, just one stroke behind the leaders.
Natalia Espinosa was tied for 30th with a first round score of 80, while Tara Steakin was the third best Argo in round one, with a score of 82, which tied for 40th best. Meanwhile, Rachel Christ and Meaghan Gulliksen were tied for 45th with a first round score of 86. Eleven teams and 62 total golfers teed off to start the scheduled three round tournament.
