CALERA, Ala. - West Florida finished the first day of golf in sixth place and Sarah Nicholson is atop the leader board following two rounds of golf in the Samford Intercollegiate taking place at the Timberline Golf Course in Calera, Ala.
As a team, the Argonauts finished the first round tied for eighth with a 318 total score in the round. The Argonauts were able to improve on their first round score by four strokes to a 314 total, which was good enough to move them into a tie for sixth place out of 14 teams. West Florida two-round total of 632 is 19 strokes behind current lead South Alabama.
Nicholson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/ Cedar Falls HS) finished tied for fifth shooting +4 (75) in the opening round of the Samford Invitational and in the second round Nicholson one up herself shooing a +3 (74), which was enough to take the lead after the first day. Nicholson's first day total of 169 is one stroke better then three golfer in second place.
Clara Fornella (Montevideo, Uruguay/Seminario) also finished the second round +3 (74), which moved her up 22 places on the score board to 18th after she shot a first round +10 (81). Vicky Jackson (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Fort Walton Beach HS) is currently in 40th place with a two round total of a 161 (79-82). Natalia Espinosa (Bogota, Colombia), tied for 61st place, and Rachel Christ (Charlotte, N.C./ University of Charlotte), tied for 63rd place, round out the five Argonaut contingents. Espinosa shot a 167 on the day (83-84) while Christ finished with a 169 (85-84).
The Argonauts will wrap up the Samford Intercollegiate with one round Tuesday at the Timberline Golf Course. A short gun start is scheduled for 9 a.m.
