LAKELAND, Fla. - West Florida dropped from third to fourth out of 14 teams in the final round at the Lady Moc Classic hosted by tournament winner, first ranked Florida Southern, at the Cleveland Heights Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla. Sarah Nicholson finished in a tie for fifth following a final round score of 73.
West Florida shot a 926. They were 20 shots behind winner Florida Southern who shot a 906. Florida Southern was nine shots up on second place and second ranked Lynn. Third ranked Rollins was third with a 925, and one shut ahead of UWF. Sixth ranked Barry was seven shots behind UWF for fifth place with a 933. Fourth ranked Nova Southeastern was sixth with a 937.
Nicholson ended the tournament as the top Argo with a 225, +9 (77, 75, 73). Nicholson was in a three-way tie for fifth with RemiJin Camping of Barry and Daniela Iacobelli of Florida Tech. Clara Fornella was 13th with a 230, +14 (77, 76, 77). Vicky Jackson was in a tie for 18th with a 234, +18 (79, 78, 77). Natalia Espinosa finished in a tie for 25th with a 237, +21 (83, 75, 79). Laura Smith closed the tournament in a tie for 62nd, +46 (88, 87, 87).
Florida Southern's final round 296 was a tournament record, as was the 69 shot by Nova Southeastern's Maria Garica Austt to win the individual title. It's the first time since the inaugural Lady Moc Classic in 1998-99 that Florida Southern has won the event.
West Florida's next tournament will by the Samford Intercollegiate in Calera, Ala. on March 19-20.
