PENSACOLA, Fla. - After leading the West Florida women's basketball team to their fourth consecutive appearance in the Gulf South Conference Tournament last season, head coach Shannan Bergen is preparing for next year. Bergen will add five newcomers to the Argonauts roster next season.
Kimarie Bock is a 6-3 forward from Dunedin, Fla. who signed a national letter of intent. Bock, who signed during the early signing period last November, averaged 14 points and six rebounds per game last season as a senior at Dunedin High School. She was named a Top 2007 Prospect by floridahoops.com after earning all-region and all-conference honors as a junior.
Bergen also added a Division I and junior college transfer for next season. Amy Drake, a 5-6 sophomore point guard from Niceville, Fla., will transfer from Division I Winthrop University. Drake appeared in 17 games for Winthrop last season as a freshman. She averaged 16 points and five assists per game in high school. In her junior season at Niceville, Drake averaged 18 points, eight assists and five steals per game and was named the Northwest Florida Player of the Year. She also earned all-state second team honors.
Renee Polk will complete her collegiate career at West Florida next season. Polk, a 5-6 senior guard from Crestview, Fla., played two seasons at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Fla. where she averaged 10 points and five rebounds per game. Last season she helped lead Langston University in Oklahoma to the NAIA National Quarterfinals.
Two other student-athletes will be walk-ons next season. Chelsea Turgeon, a 5-5 freshman guard from Palm Harbor Florida, was a teammate of Bock at Dunedin High School. She averaged 10 points and four assists per game for Dunedin last season.
Ren Sutton is a 5-8 junior guard from Niceville, Fla. Sutton played on the Argonauts softball team for two seasons from 2005-06. At Rocky Bayou High School, Sutton was the 2004 Northwest Florida Daily News Athlete of the Year. She also earned all-state honors and was a four-time team most valuable player.
