BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - West Florida basketball was represented on the Gulf South Conference Winter All-Academic Team by junior shooting guard, Laura Davis (Spanish Fort, Ala. / Univ. of Mobile). Davis has a 3.39 ERA as a sport management major. She is a first time selection, and the fourth UWF women's basketball player to receive such honors.
Davis averaged 9.7 points per game. She led the conference in three-point percentage (44.8), and she was third in three-pointers made (69-for-154). Her three-point percentage was eighth best in the NCAA II, and three-pointers made was tied for 40th.
The Winter All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must meet all three of the following qualifications to appear on the ballot: 1) an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career, 2) a starter or significant contributor to the squad, and 3) leadership, academic curriculum and community service.
SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Freshman are not eligible, nor is any student who has not spent a full year in residence at the sponsoring GSC member and passed 24 semester hours or 36 quarter-hours towards an identifiable degree program during the year at that GSC member. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
West Florida was tied for second for most winter academic honor roll honorees with Arkansas Tech and North Alabama, who had 10 apiece. Harding led all schools with 13. A minimum grade point average of 3.00 is required.
