BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - As West Florida prepared for their Gulf South Conference Tournament match-up against Harding, two Argonauts were honored for their contributions this season. Dominique Boykins (Houston, Texas/North Shore HS) was named the GSC East Division Freshman of the Year, while Tara Russ (Lake Park, Fla./Kings Academy) earned All-GSC Second Team accolades.

Boykins is the second women's basketball player to earn freshman of the year honors and the first under head coach Shannan Bergen. Tanya Aldridge won the freshman of the year award in 1996. Boykins averaged 8.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this season. She also ranked sixth in the conference with a 53.2 percent field goal percentage. Boykins scored in double-figures in 10 games, including a career-high 26 points in a 77-74 win at West Alabama. In that game, she also pulled down 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Boykins also recorded 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds in a 65-64 win at West Georgia.

Russ earned her first All-GSC honor after an impressive junior season. With her selection, West Florida has placed at least one player on the All-GSC team for five consecutive seasons. Russ led West Florida with 9.9 points per game and was second on the team with 5.4 rebounds per game. She totaled 12 double-figure scoring games, including a career-high 26 points in the 71-63 win over Montevallo. Russ also recorded her first two double-doubles of her career. Her 39 blocks placed her seventh in the single-season record book, while her six blocks against Montevallo (2/17) were tied for the third-highest individual game total.
