VALDOSTA, Ga. - Even though West Florida has clinched a berth in next week's Gulf South Conference Tournament, the Argonauts are hoping to end the regular season on a high note. On Saturday night at The Complex, West Florida (13-13, 6-5) will face first place Valdosta State (21-5, 10-1 GSC).
West Florida is currently in a four-team tie for second place in the Gulf South Conference East Division. The Argonauts could receive anywhere from a second through fifth seed for the conference tournament.
West Florida is coming off a 76-59 loss to West Alabama on Monday that ended a three-game winning streak. Senior Abena Bosia (Orlando, Fla./Columbus State) led West Florida with 16 points and eight rebounds. Valdosta State enters Saturday's game on a nine-game winning streak. The Blazers are coming off a 72-49 win over Montevallo on Monday.
Earlier this season on Jan. 27 at the UWF Field House, Valdosta State dominated West Florida, 49-32. Valdosta State leads the all-time series, 14-11, and the Blazers have won the last two home meetings.
West Florida is led by Tara Russ's (Lake Park, Fla./Kings Academy) 10 points per game. Laura Davis (Spanish Fort, Ala./University of Mobile) is shooting 44 percent (63-142) from three-point range. Bosia leads the Argonauts and is in the top 10 in the conference with 9.3 rebounds per game. Valdosta State leads the conference and is ranked second in the nation in scoring defense. Opponents are only averaging 44.9 points per game, and Valdosta State has held five conference opponents to under 50 points this season.
