PENSACOLA, Fla. - After a hard-fought win on Monday to end a four-game road swing, West Florida (10-10, 3-2) will return to the UWF Field House this Saturday against Gulf South Conference East Division rival Valdosta State (14-5, 4-1). Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. CST.
West Florida is in a three-way tie for second place in the GSC East, one game behind Valdosta State. Saturday's game marks the halfway point of the conference schedule.
Dominique Boykins (Houston, Texas/North Shore HS) posted her first career double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds in West Florida's 77-74 win Monday over West Alabama. Laura Davis (Spanish Fort, Ala./Univ. of Mobile) added 15 points, while Abena Bosia (Orlando, Fla./Columbus State) pulled down 13 rebounds. The win ended a two-game losing streak and was the first victory in Livingston, Ala. since 2001. West Florida is currently ranked fifth in the conference in scoring defense, allowing 58.5 points per game, while limiting offenses to a 36 percent field goal percentage (third in the conference).
Valdosta State is on a three-game winning streak, and the Lady Blazers have won six of their last seven. Nina Risto led the way with 10 points in Valdosta State's 57-51 win over Montevallo on Monday. Valdosta State is currently ranked number one in the nation in scoring defense. The Lady Blazers are only allowing 44.8 points per game.
Valdosta State leads the all-time series 13-11, however, the Lady Blazers have lost the last three meetings in Pensacola. The Lady Blazers have not won at the UWF Field House since Feb. 22, 2003. West Florida is 6-4 at home this season, and the Argonauts have won 21 consecutive home games against GSC East Division opponents.
