UWF Women's Basketball Drops Tournament Opener 73-55 to Henderson State

Dec. 29, 2007

PENSACOLA, Fla. - A slow start doomed the Argonauts, as Henderson State started out hot and raced out to a 19-3 lead. The Argos fought back and got to within five points at 34-29 just before halftime, but the Lady Reddies outscored West Florida 15-5 to start the second half, to go on to the win. Henderson State connected on 11 of 23 three pointers and that was the difference in the game.

Senior Laura Davis led the Argos with 12 points, while Dominique Boykins and Chelsea Patterson each chipped in with nine points. Henderson State had four players score in double digits, led by Chanlee Bottoms, with 16 points. The Lady Reddies out-rebounded the Argos 46-35, and shot 48% from the field, while the Argos only connected on 28% from the field. This was the third straight game that West Florida has shot below 30% from the field.

Senior Samantha Schlaegel grabbed nine rebounds for West Florida, while Tiffany Scott contributed with three assists. Freshman Chelsea Turgeon came off the bench to score four points and record two steals. The Argonauts will face Arkansas Monticello on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Arkansas Monticello (6-5) fell to West Alabama in the other tournament game Saturday, by a 75-63 score.

West Florida trailed the entire contest, and outscored the Lady Reddies 15-6 near the end of the first half to get within four points, on the strength of two free throws from Jessie Ivey, a jumper from Tara Russ, and two free throws by Patterson. However, Henderson State connected on a pair of three pointers in the last two minutes of the first half.
