MOBILE, Ala. - The Argonauts improved to 4-3 on the season, with their first road win of the year. West Florida raced out to a 27-11 lead, only to see Spring Hill close to within four points at halftime, on the strength of a 14-2 run over the final eight minutes of the first half. West Florida took control again early in the second have and opened up a commanding 14 point lead, thanks to a run of six straight points from Chelsea Patterson. Spring Hill stayed close with some hot shooting as they hit five of eight three pointers in the second half.
Senior Tara Russ led all players with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Karmeshia Easley, who transferred three years ago from Spring Hill, lit up her former team with 15 points, by hitting 7 of 8 field goals. The Badger's Sheridan Hollis hit four three pointers to keep Spring Hill in the game, and she ended with 13 points. Rashonda Belton led the Badgers with 17 points.
West Florida Head Coach Shannan Bergen was pleased with the win, "It was nice to get our first road win, and maybe we can use the momentum for our next four road games." West Florida does not return home to play until December 29th. "Our defense was very good tonight, we had a cold stretch shooting at the end of the first half, but our defense kept us in the lead." Bergen said. Patterson helped jump start the Argos at the start of the second half, and she ended the game with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
The Argonauts out-rebounded Spring Hill 43-32, and had 12 steals that led to some easy fast break baskets. Senior Renee' Polk was outstanding off the bench with a steal and five points. Polk has scored 19 points in the last three games coming off the bench to provide a spark for the Argonauts. West Florida was a season low, one out of eight, from three point shots, and had to rely on fast break points to hold on for the win. West Florida travels to New Orleans this weekend to play against Dillard and Loyola. The next home game is on December 29th, when the Argos host their holiday classic and face Henderson State and Arkansas Monticello.
