LAKELAND, Fla - Twenty Eight turnovers and poor shooting (26% from the field) was the downfall for the Argonauts as they dropped to 0-2 with a 62-51 loss at Florida Southern College. This was the second of three road games to start the season for the young and inexperienced squad. One of the bright spots for West Florida was a double-double performance (12 points, 11 Rebounds) from Samantha Schlaegel.
Coach Shannan Bergen was frustrated with her team's play. "I was disappointed tonight, because it was a game we could have won. We didn't come mentally ready to play. The kids tried hard, but they got off to a slow start and didn't play smart, and Florida Southern took advantage of that and made some big plays when they needed to."
The Argos trailed most of the first half and went into halftime down 34-28. The Moccasins from Florida Southern hit 4 of 5 three pointers in the first half to gain the lead. UWF battled back in the second half, and took a 42-41 lead with 7:18 to play after a Schlaegel basket, but were outscored 13-3 over the next four minutes. Two free throws by Abena Bosia closed the gap back to 6 points with 1:57 to play, and then a Karmeshia Easley steal gave some life back to the Argos, but they couldn't convert and Florida Southern then scored the next 5 points.
Laura Davis scored 11 points and added 4 assists, while Bosia added 8 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. Heather George scored 8 points with 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals, but it all wasn't enough to counter a game high 14 points from Wilma Folks for Florida Southern. Florida Southern improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Argos fall to 0-2 and play again on the road this Tuesday at Albany State.
