PENSACOLA, Fla. - The West Florida Women's Basketball team concluded their season Saturday night at Valdosta State with their sixth straight conference road loss. Valdosta State raced out to a 17-7 lead, and basically hung for the rest of the night. The Blazers had as much as a 19 point lead, and the Argos trimmed it to 57-48, with five minutes to play, but could not get any closer. Valdosta State improved to 23-4 on the season, while the Argos fell to 9-18 on the year.
Dominique Boykins led the Argos with 14 points, and her layup with 3:45 left in the first half pulled the Argos to within 25-17; however, the Blazers answered with a 7-2 to finish the half with a 32-19 lead. After the Blazers pushed the lead to 19 in the second half, a three pointer by Samantha Schlaegel and a layup by Tara Russ pulled the Argos to within 10 points. Moments later, a free throw by Russ, made it only a nine point deficit; however, two consecutive three point baskets by the games leading scorer Janelle Collazo put an end to the Argos rally.
Collazo scored 19 points for VSU, who connected on seven of 16 three point shots, and also out-rebounded the Argos 38-24. Samantha Schlaegel led all rebounders in the game with eight, while she also contributed five points and three steals. Tara Russ added nine points and two steals, while Tiffany Scott added six points, two steals, and two assists. Laura Davis also had two steals for the Argos, along with her five points.
Renee Polk came off the bench to provide nine points and two rebounds in just 17 minutes of play. Amy Drake also provided some spark off the bench with five points and four assists. Meanwhile, Karmeshia Easley added two points and two assists.
Six Argonaut Seniors; Russ, Davis, Schlaegel, Easley, Scott, and Polk were playing their final game in an Argonaut uniform. It was Senior night for Valdosta State, and as the tip went up, there were 10 Seniors on the court, all playing against each other for the final time. Next season, when the two teams play again, an entire new set of 10 players will step out on the court for the tip-off.
