MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Dominique Boykins helped the West Florida Women's Basketball team get out to an early lead, as she scored 8 points in the first four minutes of play. Boykins would end the night with a game high 20 points. Meanwhile, the Argos led 21-17 with 6 minutes to go in the first half, and then the Falcons put together an 18-4 run to close the half and go up by 10 points. The two teams played even in the second half and Montevallo coasted to a 70-61 win.
West Florida shot 40 percent from the field in the first half, while Montevallo only shot 35 percent; however, the Falcons used some offense rebounds in the late part of the first half to get second chances and converted them into baskets. The Argos did regroup and took back the momentum at the start of the second half, and scored six straight points, and then a couple minutes later, trimmed the lead to only three points. Back to back three pointers by Laura Davis and Samantha Schlaegel provided the momentum.
However, Montevallo then put together another mini run, outscoring the Argos16-7, to go back up by 15 points. After another three pointer from Davis, and a pair of free throws by Tara Russ, UWF closed the gap to within 9 points, and that was the closest the Argos would get, as the teams traded baskets in the final minutes. Tara Russ scored all 12 of her points, and Laura Davis scored all of her six points in the second half. Meanwhile, the Argos had no answer for Jamie Graham of Montevallo, who scored 19 points and had 15 rebounds, and four steals.
West Florida had controlled the game and had the lead for the first 14 minutes, primarily on the play of Domnique Boykins, and a couple baskets from Chelsea Patterson, and some solid play from Tiffany Scott, who added four points, four rebounds, and three assists. Montevallo began to double team and occasionally triple team Boykins, and as a result, the Argos had some open outside shots, but could only connect on four of 20 from beyond the 3 point line.
Karmeshia Easley added six points and two assists, while Samantha Schlaegel pulled down 10 rebounds to go with her three points. Point Guard Chelsea Patterson chipped in with eight points, four assists, and three steals. Amy Drake added a couple points and three assists. Overall the Argos were out-rebounded by the bigger Montevallo team by a 50-33 margin.
The Argonauts fell to 9-16 overall, and will return home this Monday night for Senior night. Tara Russ, Karmeshia Easley, Laura Davis, Tiffany Scott, Samantha Schlaegel, and Renee' Polk will play their final home game as an Argonaut, as West Alabama comes to town. The start time is 5:30 pm, and the Seniors will be honored just before tip-off.
