UWF Women's Basketball falls on the road to North Alabama, 70-63

FLORENCE, Ala. - With the game tied at 63, with less than 30 seconds left, the Argos played outstanding defense, only to have the Lions throw in a three point shot, with the shot clock winding down, to take the lead. After a miss by West Florida, North Alabama tacked on some free throws to win 70-63. Amy Drake led the Argonauts with 24 points, and had tied the game at 63 with a running jump shot with 1:30 to play. Dominique Boykins added 10 points, while Samantha Schlaegel pulled down nine rebounds.

In a game of runs, the Argos started out with a 7-3 lead, after Karmeshia Easley scored a three point play, on a layup and one. Then the Lions reeled off 12 straight points to take a 15-7 lead. West Florida battled back and used a 12-3 run to take a 33-32 lead. Tiffany Scott hit a big three pointer in part of the run. However, North Alabama scored the final nine points of the half to take a 41-33 lead.

The second half opened with another eight point swing for North Alabama, and the lead with 16 points, just two minutes into the second half. The Argos rallied and finally tied the score at 61, with just over two minutes left in the contest. Samantha Schlaegel, Chelsea Patterson, and Tara Russ added some important baskets, along with two big three pointers from Amy Drake. However, the momentum ended as North Alabama scored the final seven points in the last 30 seconds.

West Florida will travel to Montevallo on Saturday, and then return home for Senior night next Monday, when West Alabama comes into town for a 5:30 pm match-up. The Argos dropped to 9-15 on the season, and 2-7 in conference play.

Tara Russ added six points, while Chelsea Patterson scored eight points. Tiffany Scott had a solid game, with five points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Scott had two key steals in the second half rally that helped tie the score. Meanwhile, Karmeshia Easley added five points, three rebounds, and a steal.
