PENSACOLA, Fla. - Jessica Thompson scored 20 points off the bench and converted six three-point field goals to help lead West Alabama to a 76-59 win over West Florida Monday night at the UWF Field House. The loss ended West Florida's (13-13, 6-5 GSC) three-game winning streak. West Alabama (18-8, 6-5 GSC) ended a four-game losing streak at the UWF Field House.
With West Alabama leading 24-17 with 8:32 remaining in the first half, West Florida went on an 8-1 run to tie the game at 25. However, West Florida was unable to grab the lead as West Alabama took a 34-32 lead into halftime.
West Florida tied the game at 34 early in the second half, but West Alabama went on a 14-4 run to open up a 10-point advantage with 12:38 remaining. West Florida answered with five consecutive points on an Elisa Hardy (Nashville, Tenn./Donelson Christian) three-point field goal and two free throws by Abena Bosia (Orlando, Fla./Columbus State). But West Alabama put the game away with a 17-7 run over a five-minute span to build a 65-50 lead with 6:29 remaining. Thompson hit two of her six three-pointers during the run. West Florida cut the deficit to 11 over the final six minutes, but the Argonauts would not get any closer.
Bosia led West Florida with 16 points and eight rebounds. Laura Davis (Spanish Fort, Ala./Univ. of Mobile) converted three three-point field goals and finished with 13 points. Tiffany Scott (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Seminole CC) added 10 points and five rebounds. West Florida shot 89 percent (17-19) from the free throw line, but the Argonauts committed 25 turnovers. Aside from Thompson's 20 points, Irimar Hernandez totaled 15 points, while Ashton Washington finished with eight points, six steals and 14 rebounds.
