PENSACOLA, Fla. - The West Florida Women's basketball team halted a two-game losing streak with a 75-65 win Monday night at the UWF Fieldhouse over Gulf South Conference rival Alabama-Huntsville.
The Chargers opened the game with an 8-0 run and would hold on to a nine point lead for the first five minutes of the game, until the Argonauts went on a 23-5 run of their own to take a 28-19 lead with 4:38 left to play in the half.
West Florida was able to maintain the lead in the final minutes of the half, however, Alabama-Huntsville cut the lead to as close as one point before the Argos took a four point, 34-30, half time lead.
The Chargers Jessica Russell led all scorers with nine first half points. For the Argos in the first half, Tara Russ (Lake Park, Fla./ Kings Academy) led the team with eight points, while teammate Jessica Ivey (Jay, Fla./ Jay HS) and Dominique Boykins (Houston, Texas/ North Shore HS)each accumulateed seven points in the half. Defensively Abena Bosia (Orlando, Fla./ Coloumbus State) had a big first half collecting six defensive rebounds, eight total rebounds in the half.
The second half started similar to the first half with Alabama-Huntsville opening the second period with a 9-5 run, which tied the game at 39 with 15 minutes left to play.
The Argos would respond over the next two minutes scoring 11 unanswered points. During the 11-0 UWF run Bosia picked up three points, two rebounds, and a steals.
The teams would battle back and forth for the final 12 minutes of the half with West Florida taking their largest lead at 70-51 with 4:32 remaining in the game.
Boykins led the Argonauts with 15 points from the field, while teammates and Laura Davis (Spanish Fort, Ala./ University of Alabama) Ivey and Russ all picked up 12 points. Bosia was a point short of a double-double with 12 rebounds and nine points.
For the Chargers, Russell led all scorers with 19 points and team leading scorer Kristen Banes scored 14 points.
