PENSACOLA, Fla. - Valdosta State (15-5, 5-1) put on a defensive exhibition today in the UWF Field House. The Blazers showed why they have the nation's best defense en route to a 49-32 win over West Florida (10-11, 3-3). Valdosta State led from start to finish, and they forced 27 turnovers.
West Florida got off to a terrible start trailing 9-0. The Argos went the first 5:17 without a single point. A three-pointer by Tiffany Scott (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Seminole CC) cut VSU's lead to 9-6 with 8:18 left to play in the first half. The Blazers went on their second 9-0 run to take an 18-6 lead with 3:38 showing on the clock. West Florida trailed 25-12 at halftime. Only three players scored for UWF in the first half. The Argos never got closer than 12 points in the second half.
Valdosta State was led by Carly Peterson's 17 points, including five three's. Khaleh Thomas added 12 points and nine boards. The Blazers shot just 30.8 percent. However they committed just 11 turnovers, while scoring 25 points off UWF's turnovers. Dominique Boykins (Houston, Texas / North Shore HS) led UWF with nine points and eight rebounds in just 21 minutes. Tara Russ (Lake Park, Fla. / Kings Academy) had nine points and six boards. West Florida shot just 27.8 percent from the field.
