PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Alabama Huntsville Chargers drained 11 of 19 three point shots to blow out the Argonauts Saturday night. West Florida lead 12-9 in the first half, and then four straight 3-pointers by the Chargers started the rout, and suddenly West Florida trailed by 18. The Argonauts scrappy defense helped to close the gap to only 11 points at halftime. However, the Chargers started the second half with three straight 3-pointers, and the Argos could never recover.
West Florida, one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the conference one year ago, is next to last this year shooting behind the arc, and they connected on only 2 of 14 for the game. The bright spots for West Florida was Dominique Boykins with 26 points, and eight points from Jessie Ivey. Boykins was 7 of 9 from the field, while Ivey connected on the only two 3-pointers for the Argos, and scored all her eight points in the second half. .
West Florida, now 7-10 (0-2 GSC) will travel to take on 25th ranked West Georgia on Monday night in Carrollton, Georgia. The Argonauts have never started the conference schedule with two straight losses, since joining the Gulf South Conference in 1994. Therefore, the Argos will have an uphill battle to reach the conference tournament.
The other Argos that turned in good performances against Alabama Huntsville, included Senior Karmeshia Easley, who scored six points and dished out four assists. Meanwhile, Freshman Chelsea Turgeon added eight points, three rebounds, and two assists in twenty minutes off the bench.
