FLORENCE, Ala. - The Lions of North Alabama (9-10, 2-2) handed West Florida (9-9, 2-1) their first conference loss of the season tonight, 71-64. The game marked the second of four consecutive road GSC games for the Argonauts.
Amber Rutherford dominated for UNA by scoring 29 points on 10-for-17 shooting and 9-for-9 from the line. She also had seven rebounds. Tandra Inmon was also on target for the Lions. She scored 18 points. West Florida was led by Abena Bosia's second double-double of the season. She scored a season high 15 points with 11 rebounds. Tara Russ contributed with 13 points. Tiffany Scott added nine points and nine boards.
North Alabama took care of the basketball tonight. The Lions committed just 10 turnovers, while forcing 22 from UWF. West Florida out rebounded UNA, 42-32, and 15-7 in offensive boards. The Lions were just 2-for-19 from three-point range. However, they sparkled from the line going 19-for-21.
North Alabama led for most of the game. The Lions had a 32-31 lead at halftime. Through the first four minutes of the second half, UNA went on a 12-2 run giving the Lions their largest lead, 44-33. The Argos cut the deficit to one, 47-46, by going on a 13-3 run. West Florida Laura Davis connected on back-to-back three's to give her team a brief second half lead, 59-57, with 4:40 left to play. With the game tied at 61-61 and 2:13 left to play, UNA out scored UWF, 10-3 down the stretch. West Florida failed to score another field goal until the game was out of reach.
The first half was closely contested. The Lions led for most of the first half, but their lead never exceeded five points.
