HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Argonauts limped into conference play this year losing four consecutive games before snapping that skid with a home win in the GSC opener last Saturday against West Georgia. West Florida (9-8, 2-0) took their defense on the road with them today, and defeated Alabama-Huntsville (4-11, 0-3), 61-54.
The Argos defense limited the Chargers to a 28.6 (18-for-63) shooting percentage, including just 17.1 (6-for-35) percent from three-point range. The Chargers were just 2-for-19 from three-point range in the second half. West Florida shot 44.2 (23-for-52) percent, and 5-for-13 from behind the arc.
West Florida was led by the hot shooting of Laura Davis who scored a team high 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting and 3-for-4 from three-point range. Dominique Boykins was key off the bench for UWF. She scored 13 points on 6-for-11 shooting with seven rebounds in 22 minutes. Abena Bosia scored eight points with a team high nine boards. Karmeshia Easley added nine points. Alabama-Huntsville's Kristen Banes led all scorers with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Stephanie Gehlhausen tallied 13 points and seven boards.
Trailing 31-28 at the half, UWF set the pace for the second half by going on an 11-2 run to take a six point lead. The Argos led for the remainder of the game. They led by as many as 10 points with 4:20 left to play, 54-44. The Chargers made one last push at the Argos behind the play of Banes who nailed a jumper and sunk a pair of free-throws to cut UAH's deficit to six with 2:59 remaining. Boykins finished a lay-up assisted by Easley with 1:10 showing on the clock. Banes made one-of-two from the line at the 40 seconds mark. Tiffany Scott was fouled after UWF grabbed three offensive boards on one possession. Scott made one-of-two from the line with 35 seconds remaining. Mosheda Pettus made things interesting by hitting a three to cut the lead to three with 26 seconds showing on the clock. Davis was fouled and made both free throws to give UWF a five-point advantage, 59-54. Pettus missed a three and Bosia pulled down the rebound to seal the win.
West Florida started the game by taking a 7-0 lead. The Argos pushed their lead to 15-6. The Chargers went on their most impressive run of the game by outscoring UWF 25-13 over the final 14 minutes of the first half.
