PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Florida shook off the rust of a 13-day winter break lay-off and easily defeated Gulf South Conference West opponent Southern Arkansas, 66-53. The win was part of the two-day, four-team UWF Surf Burger Holiday Classic hosted by West Florida.
The turning point of the game came early in the second half. The Argus clung to a 36-32 lead at the 18:19 mark. West Florida exploded on a 10-0 run that SAU never rebounded from. The Argos led by as many as 17 points en route to the win.
West Florida was led by Michelle Gibson's 17 points, five rebounds and three steals. Heather George may have notched her top game as an Argo by scoring 13 points, seven assists, five boards and four steals. Erin Vierling added 11 points. Southern Arkansas was led by Latrice Booker's 13 points and six rebounds. Sharonda Davis contributed with 10 points and nine rebounds. Takela Gunn recorded 10 steals.
West Florida opened the game by building an 11-2 lead. Southern Arkansas followed that surge with a 13-2 run of their own. The run gave SAU their only lead of the game. The Riderette's lead did not last long and the Argos led by six at the break, 36-30. Lyndsay Munro scored eight of her 10 points in the first half.
West Florida runs their record to 8-3 overall and Southern Arkansas dips to 4-5. The Argos host Arkansas-Monticello tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
