MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - - West Florida rebounded nicely tonight after a difficult loss yesterday at Florida Gulf Coast. The Argonauts took their frustrations out on Sunshine State Conference rival Barry University, 70-49.
West Florida built an early lead by going on a 10-0 run to take a 12-4 lead with 14:44 left to play in the first half. Barry scored the next five points, but got no closer. The Argos answered that mini-run from Barry by scoring 13 unanswered points. West Florida led comfortably at the break, 36-18. Erin Vierling scored all 12 of her points in the first half. Barry connected on just seven first half field goals.
West Florida led by as many as 25 points in the second half. Barry cut the deficit to 13 at 52-39 with 8:44 left to play. West Florida's Michelle Gibson led all scorers with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Vierling added four assists to her 12 points. Melissa Nafzger added eight points and eight boards. Heather George continues to improve her game at the point guard position. She scored nine points on 4-of-6 shooting with seven rebounds and three assists. Lyndsay Munro added eight points. The Bucs were led by Sandra Janssen and Kristy Singletary's 10 points apiece. Alex Fernander pulled down 12 rebounds. West Florida had a 22-6 advantage in points-off-turnovers. The Argos forced 25 turnovers and committed just 12.
West Florida improves to 7-3 overall while Barry drops to 2-6. The Argos are 2-1 against Barry all-time. Next up for West Florida is Southern Arkansas on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 3:00 pm in the UWF Surf Burger Classic.
