Men's Tennis Falls 4-0 to Fifth Ranked Division I Mississippi

March 14, 2008

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWF Men's Tennis team put their 10 match win streak on the line against Division I powerhouse Mississippi (#5 nationally) this past weekend, and fell to the Rebels by a 4-0 score. The Fourth ranked Argos dropped to 10-2 overall on the season.

In doubles, Mississippi won the number two and number three matches to earn a point, and the number one match was then halted. UWF trailed 1-0 after the doubles, and lost the #1, #4, and #5 singles matches. Those three wins gave Mississippi the four points needed for victory and thus all other matches were stopped at that time.

Nicolas Barrientos and Patrick Bateman battled the 10th ranked Division I doubles team of Bram tenBerge and Matthias Wellerman, before falling by an 8-3 score. At the number three doubles spot, the Argos Luiz Bernardi and Jose Ycaza dropped an 8-2 decision to Jakob Klaeson and Tucker Vorster.

During the singles matches, Eduardo Cavasotti, who is ranked 23rd nationally, battled the 8th ranked Division I player, Matthias Wellermann. Cavasotti gave Wellermann a tough match before falling 6-3, 6-3. In the fifth singles spot, it was Mississippi's Bram tenBerge defeating Jose Ycaza by a 6-2, 6-1 score. In the sixth singles spot the Argo's Carlos Zamora dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Tucker Vorster.

The Argos resume action this week with matches against Weber International, Anderson, and Berry College. The match vs. Berry is a doubleheader with the Women's team's playing also, and is scheduled for 2;00 pm Monday afternoon on the UWF campus. West Florida is 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference.
