UWF Men's Tennis Defeats Division-I UT Martin 7-2

March 13, 2008

Pensacola, Fla. The fourth ranked West Florida Men's Tennis Team (10-1, 3-0 GSC) earned its tenth victory of the season by defeating Division I UT Martin (1-6). The Argonauts blanked rolled over the Skyhawks on Thursday, March 13th at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carlson Complex, located at the UWF main campus. The Argonauts crashed the Chargers by not dropping a match in singles and a match in doubles.

The Argos got the lead already after the doubles action. In the first doubles position, Eduardo Cavasotti (senior/Florianopolis, Brazil) and Carlos Zamora (freshman/Copenhagen, Denmark) fell short 8-6. Nicolas Barrientos (senior/Cali, Colombia) and Patrick Batman (sophomore/Apopka, Fla.) had a good battle against Skyhawks Chris Slabbery and Alfredo Krywacz 8-6 in the second doubles spot. Luiz Bernardi (senior/Campinas, Brazil) and Rob Fair (junior/Pensacola, Fla.) defeated Stewart McRae and Matt Harris 9-7. After the doubles play, the Argonauts got the 2-1 lead over the Chargers.

In the singles action, the Argos dominated the Skyhawks by falling short in only one spot. In the first singles spot, Barrientos defeated Stephan Bruwer in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-4. In the second doubles spot, Bernardi defeated Andrey Yesipov 6-2, 6-4. Ycaza only played a set, since after he won the first by a 6-3 score, Krywacz had to retire due to an injury. Playing in the fourth spot, Zamora rolled over Slabbery with a 6-1, 6-4 score. The Argonauts earned its other two remaining points in the bottom line spots. In the fifth position, Batman defeated Markov with a doubles 6-1 score. The Skyhawks earned its second point when, playing in the sixth position, Fair fell short to Skyhawk McRae by a 6-4, 6-3 score, to hit a final score of 7-2 to the Argonauts.

The Argonauts earned its tenth win of the season and improved its overall record to 10-1. The Argonauts will return to action tomorrow, March 14, 2008, when they face another Division I opponent. The Argos will face a challenging opponent, the fourth ranked Ole Mississippi. This will be the UWF men's tennis team's second home match of the season, to be played at 1:00p.m. CT at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carlson Complex, located at the UWF main campus in Pensacola.
