West Florida Survives Tough Test

Winter Park, Fla. The third ranked, West Florida (6-1) is off a wonderful start this season. After dropping the season opener, the Argonauts bounced back with six straight matches. This time the Argos defeated seventh ranked Barry (7-2) on Sunday. This is the Argos first win over a top ten opponent.

The Argonauts fell short to earn the lead after the doubles action. In the first doubles position, Carlos Zamora (freshman/Copenhagen, Denmark) and Eduardo Cavasotti (senior/Florianopolis, Brazil) fell to the Bucs first duo, 8-5. The Argonauts evened the match after the second duo formed by Nicolas Barrientos (senior/Cali, Colombia) and Patrick Batman (sophomore/Apopka, Fla.) beat Bucs Emmanuel Fraitzl and Jakub Fejfar 8-5. Luiz Bernardi (senior/Campinas, Brazil) and Jose Ycaza (junior/ Guayaquil, Ecuador) fell short to the Bucs at a 9-7 score, giving the Bucs the 2-1 lead.

In the singles action, the Argonauts bounced back and won four out of six matches. Playing in the first position, 23rd ranked Cavasotti defeated Ales Svigelj 7-6(1), 6-1 to tie the match at 2-2. 17th ranked, Barrientos defeated 49th ranked Roman Werschel 6-3, 7-6(4) in the second position, giving the 3-2 lead to the Argonauts. Bernardi fell short to the Bucs 6-4, 6-3. In the fourth position, Zamora also fell short in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, and once again the Bucs had the lead, at 4-3. In the sixth spot, Batman tied the match again at 4-4, by defeating Jakub Fejfar 6-4, 6-3. In the clinch match, at the fifth spot, Ycaza had a well fough match against 43rd ranked Andrew Sharnov. Ycaza defeated the fifth player from the Bucs with a 7-6(5), 7-5 to give the Argonauts the final score of 5-4.

The Argonauts earned the sixth win of the season and improved its record to 6-1, while the Bucs dropped to 7-2. The Argonauts will return to action on Friday, March 7th, 2008, when they face unranked GSC Rival West Alabama in Huntsville, Ala. at 12:00p.m. CT. This will be the first match played against a GSC opponent this season. During the two-day road trip, the Argos will later face GSC rivals North Alabama, and Alabama-Huntsville.
