Former Argonaut Mario Vergara is back at West Florida in his second season as assistant coach.
Vergara played under head coach Derrick Racine from 2002 to 2005. He totaled a 67-21 singles record, including a 22-5 record in 2004. Vergara won at least 18 singles matches in three of his four Argonaut seasons. Vergara was equally as impressive in doubles, compiling a 70-23 record. He won at least 20 matches in three seasons, including a 25-7 mark in his senior season.
Vergara helped lead West Florida to three GSC titles, and the Argonauts advanced to the national tournament in each of his four seasons. He was a member of West Florida's back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championship teams in 2004 and 2005.
Vergara was an Intercollegiate Tennis Association/NCAA Division II All-American in doubles with partner Paulius Jurkenas in 2005. That same year, he earned All-GSC First Team honors and received the prestigious Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award.
Vergara is a native of Mexico City, Mexico.
